A Refuge in the Orchard
In 1846, Edgar Allan Poe moved his family to a small wooden cottage on Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx (then known as Fordham). He was seeking a peaceful environment for his wife, Virginia, who was suffering from tuberculosis. The “Poe Cottage” still stands today as a testament to his time in the borough. It was in this quiet, rural setting that he wrote some of his most famous late works, including the hauntingly beautiful poem “Annabel Lee.”
