The Bronx: Then & Now – Pelham Bay Park
The Shoreline’s Memory
In the early decades of the 20th century, Pelham Bay Park was a sprawling frontier of saltwater and silence. To visit the “Riviera of the Bronx” back then was to experience a deliberate escape from the industrial grit of a rising city. You’d see families arriving by wooden rowboats or early motorcars, the men often in full suits and the women in modest, heavy swimwear—a testament to a time when even leisure had a sense of formality. The park was a collection of unspoiled meadows and jagged coastlines where the only soundtrack was the cry of gulls and the rhythmic lap of the Long Island Sound against the rocks.
Today, that same landscape has transformed into a high-energy sanctuary of modern recreation. The quiet trails have been joined by paved bike paths, and the rowboats of the past have made way for kayaks and the constant, blue-and-white pulse of the BX12 bus bringing thousands to the edge of the water. The silence has been replaced by the bass of portable speakers, the chatter of joggers, and the collective exhale of a borough that uses this green space to recharge. It is no longer just a remote destination; it is the lungs of the Bronx, a democratic playground where the city’s diversity is on full display under the open sky.
Despite the modernization, the “Then” and “Now” share a common thread: the human need to seek the horizon. Whether it was a 1920s family finding a quiet spot on Hunter Island or a modern-day group setting up a barbecue near the recreation center, the pull of the water remains unchanged. The park stands as a living bridge, reminding us that no matter how much the skyline or the transportation evolves, the shoreline offers the same peace to every generation that walks its paths.
Next Episode: From the shoreline to the “Champs-Élysées of the Bronx.” We head to the Grand Concourse at 161st St. to see how Art Deco elegance has transformed into a modern urban powerhouse.
