The Inventory of the Debt

The Inventory of the Debt.
A high-contrast, textured ink-wash illustration in a dramatic neo-noir graphic novel style. The view is from deep inside a completely dark hallway, looking out through a heavy, partially open wooden doorway. Outside, a quiet city street at midnight is illuminated by a sharp overhead streetlamp, casting vibrant amber and deep blue reflections across the wet-looking pavement. The scene features exaggerated, deep charcoal shadows and hand-drawn line textures on a textured paper background, with no people present, creating a solemn and atmospheric boundary.

The Inventory of the Debt

I didn’t walk away to punish you.

I walked away to settle my own accounts.

For a long time, I thought endurance meant staying in the room

While the oxygen was slowly being drawn out.

You view my exit as a sudden, sharp betrayal.

I view it as a quiet return to my own baseline.

You are keeping track of what you lost when I closed the door.

I am keeping track of what I saved.
