Dreams Anthology: The Hill — Chapter Five

Written by Dennis Harvell

The Ascent

I stood at the base of a steep hill, its slope rising into mist. The ground beneath my feet was uneven, scattered with stones that seemed placed to test my balance. Each step upward demanded effort, yet the climb felt necessary, as if the hill itself was calling me forward.

The Weight

A strap pulled tight around my waist, tethering me to something unseen. At first, I resisted, thinking the burden would slow me down. But as I climbed, I realized the weight was not punishment — it was proof of my strength. Every pull forward was a reminder that I could carry more than I believed.

The Midpoint

Halfway up, the mist thickened. I could barely see the path, but I kept moving. The hill seemed endless, yet each step brought me closer to clarity. I felt the tension between exhaustion and determination, knowing that the midpoint was not the end, but a test of resolve.

The Release

Near the top, the tether snapped loose. The weight vanished, leaving me unburdened. I stood taller, lighter, as if the hill had stripped away what I no longer needed. The climb was no longer about struggle — it was about freedom.

The Summit

At the crest, I looked down at the path behind me. The stones, the mist, the tether — all part of the journey that shaped me. Ahead, the horizon stretched wide, promising new trials but also new strength. The hill had not defeated me; it had prepared me.

Reflection

The hill was not an obstacle, but a teacher. It showed me that burdens can become lessons, and that release often comes only after persistence. The climb was a reminder that growth is earned step by step, and that freedom often waits at the summit.
