Dreams Anthology: The River — Chapter Six

Written by Dennis Harvell

The Approach

I walked toward the sound of rushing water. The forest opened into a wide river, its surface shimmering like liquid glass. The current was strong, carrying fragments of light downstream as if the river itself was alive with memory.

The Crossing

A narrow bridge stretched across, but it was incomplete — planks missing, ropes frayed. I hesitated, knowing the crossing would demand balance and trust. The river roared beneath, daring me to step forward.

The Immersion

Instead of the bridge, I stepped into the water. The current pulled at me, cold and relentless, yet strangely cleansing. Each stride felt like surrender, as if the river was stripping away doubt and fear.

The Encounter

Midstream, a figure appeared beside me, walking calmly across the surface. They carried no burden, only a lantern that glowed against the rushing dark. Without speaking, they nodded, and the light guided me toward the far bank.

The Arrival

I emerged soaked but unbroken. The river had not defeated me; it had baptized me into resilience. Behind me, the current carried away what I no longer needed. Ahead, the path was clear, renewed by the crossing.

Reflection

The river was not a barrier, but a passage. It taught me that surrender can be strength, and that letting go is sometimes the only way forward. The dream reminded me that resilience is not resistance, but flow — moving with life’s currents instead of against them.
