Open Door Policy — A Glimpse Into Her Nature
“She had a warmth that made people feel safe, a softness that made them feel understood. She helped anyone who needed something — a meal, a place to sit, a few dollars she couldn’t spare, or simply someone to listen. Her generosity wasn’t loud or showy; it was instinctive, the way some people breathe.”
“And because she was gentle and soft‑spoken, some people mistook that kindness for something they could use. They leaned on her more than they should have, taking what she offered without ever giving anything back. They saw her open heart as an open door.”
“She wasn’t weak.”
“She was trusting.”
“She believed people were good because she wanted to be good to them.”
Excerpt from my memoir The Hand I Refused To Play, Chapter 10 “Open Door Policy“.
